Contact lens hygiene: 7 habits that protect your eyes

Most contact lens problems we see at the clinic are preventable. These habits keep your eyes comfortable and infection free.

Contact lenses are wonderful. They give you a full field of vision, they do not fog up, and they let you wear any sunglasses you like. They also sit directly on your eye, which means hygiene matters more than with glasses.

1. Wash and dry your hands first

Always. Use plain soap and a lint-free towel. Avoid moisturising soaps, which leave residue on the lens.

2. Never top up old solution

Empty the case completely each time and fill with fresh solution. Topping up dilutes the disinfectant and grows bacteria.

3. Replace the case every three months

Lens cases are a common source of infection. Set a phone reminder. We provide a fresh case with every supply at Canon.

4. Take them out before you sleep

Unless you have been specifically fitted for extended-wear lenses, do not sleep in them. Overnight wear sharply increases the risk of corneal ulcers.

5. Keep water away

No showering, swimming or splashing your face with lenses in. Tap water contains amoeba that can cause severe eye infections.

6. Stick to the replacement schedule

Daily lenses are daily. Monthly lenses are monthly. Stretching the schedule is the most common cause of dry, red, irritated eyes.

7. Come for an annual lens check

A lens that fits today may not fit in twelve months. We assess the cornea, the tear film and the fit annually so you stay safe and comfortable.
