Why a fitting is necessary

A contact lens sits directly on the surface of your eye, so it has to match the curvature and size of your cornea, not just your prescription strength. Lenses bought off a shelf or online without a fitting are a common cause of dry, red eyes, blurred vision and, in the worst cases, corneal infection and scarring.

This applies to cosmetic and coloured lenses as well. A lens worn only for appearance carries exactly the same risks as a corrective one, and needs the same fitting and hygiene routine.

What happens at the fitting

The session is practical and unhurried.

• Assessment of your tear film and the front surface of your eye
• Measurement of corneal curvature and lens sizing
• Trial lenses fitted and assessed while you wear them
• Training on inserting, removing and cleaning your lenses
• A wear schedule, plus a follow-up appointment to confirm the fit

Caring for your lenses

Wash and dry your hands before handling lenses, never rinse or store them in water or saliva, replace the storage case regularly, and respect the replacement schedule for your lens type. Remove your lenses and come in if an eye becomes red, painful or light-sensitive.
