Glaucoma screening and testing in Uyo
Pressure, field and optic nerve testing to catch glaucoma before it takes vision you cannot get back.
About 30 minutes
Everyone from age 40, anyone with a parent or sibling who has glaucoma, and patients with diabetes or long-term steroid use.

Why screening matters
Glaucoma damages the optic nerve slowly and usually without pain. Vision is lost from the edges inward, so most people only notice once a large amount is already gone, and that loss is permanent. Screening is the only reliable way to find it early.
Glaucoma is a leading cause of irreversible blindness in Nigeria, and it runs in families. If a parent or sibling has been diagnosed, your own risk is significantly higher and screening should start earlier.
What the screening involves
Screening at Canon Eye Clinic is painless and done in one sitting.
- Tonometry to measure the pressure inside the eye
- Visual field testing to map any gaps in your side vision
- Optic nerve evaluation to look for the changes glaucoma causes
- A review of your risk factors and family history
If glaucoma is found
Glaucoma cannot be cured, but it can be controlled for life when it is caught in time. Management usually starts with pressure-lowering eye drops and regular monitoring so we can confirm the treatment is holding. Cases that need laser or surgical management are referred to a partnering ophthalmologist, and we continue your monitoring afterwards.
Common questions
At what age should I start glaucoma screening?
From 40 for most adults, and from 30 if a parent or sibling has glaucoma. Anyone with symptoms should be tested regardless of age.
Can glaucoma be reversed?
No. Vision already lost to glaucoma cannot be restored, which is why early detection and lifelong monitoring matter so much.
